Indie Alaska Goes Ice Racing

Back in 1973, I was exposed to ice racing here in Alaska. Members of the Alaska Sports Car Club, who had been racing at the Ice Palace during the summer, invited my family to come along to Hialeah Lodge.

Hooked. I was involved with the timing and scoring after lessons with Jeannie Johnson. I worked the gate at the Sand Lake races and concessions. Heck! I even raced my Renault and there are actually moving pictures showing my driving skills!

Flash forward 43-years, a few too many mild winters with minimal racing, and while no longer at 28+ cars out ice racing — ice races are still being sanctioned in the Matanuska Valley. Check out PBS KAKM Alaska Public Media’s Indie Alaska spotlight on Chris Lamson via this link: http://bitly.com/IndieAKIceRacing.

You can learn more about ice racing in South Central here. There is also ice racing on the Kenai Peninsula!

Safe travels, CL
